Island Schools/ iSHRINK: Student Competition for the Sustainable Development on the islands

Our Greek partners in the Island Schools project have collaborated with the Network of Sustainable Islands (DAFNI) to organize the First Student Competition called “Our Islands, Lighthouses for Sustainable Development” digitally, and the prizes were awarded in the Award Ceremony held on Tuesday, June 15, 2021.

The competition was organized between the collaboration of DAFNI with the local government and the academic community. The contest welcomed more than 230 students and 50 teachers from 28 Gymnasiums and Lyceums belonging to 22 Island Municipalities – they are all members of DAFNI.

The purpose of the competition was to inspire students with the ideas and frameworks of the “Smart Islands” and the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.

During the “journey”, students got a chance to understand the way and the challenges of implementing public works, which encouraged them to develop innovative ideas for public benefit projects for their islands. Besides that, it was also a good opportunity for the local government to listen to the proposals and dreams of young people for sustainable development for their living place.

Specifically, the schools developed a total of 32 completed project proposals in the areas:

  • Production and management of clean energy
  • Sustainable transport
  • Cyclical waste management
  • Cyclical water resources management.

In the end, 8 Implementation Awards were awarded as well as 4 Innovation Awards.
