STEAM subjects (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics) play an increasingly important role in preparing young people for the future. However, students do not always recognise how these subjects relate to their everyday lives. This can make STEAM feel abstract or inaccessible, particularly for learners who are less confident in traditional classroom settings.
Sport offers a familiar and engaging way to bring STEAM concepts to life. The movement of a ball can demonstrate physics, sports data can introduce mathematics and technology, the human body provides a practical context for biology, and the design of sports equipment connects engineering, creativity and materials science. Combining STEAM with sport makes learning more active, understandable and relevant.
STEAM and Sports is an Erasmus+ project that uses the broad appeal of sport to create more inclusive and engaging STEAM education. The project focuses on students aged 10–15 and their STEAM and physical education teachers. It aims to increase students’ interest in STEAM, strengthen skills such as critical thinking, creativity, teamwork and problem-solving, and provide teachers with practical methods for interdisciplinary learning.
The project brings together a university, educational organisations and schools from Spain, the Netherlands, North Macedonia, Serbia and Croatia. By combining academic expertise with practical classroom experience, the partners develop resources that can be applied and adapted in different European educational contexts.
