Redbad: European project about the mythical Frisian king

Who was King Redbad (ca. 670-719) and what was the world he lived in like? Together with eight partners from the Netherlands and Germany, we will be working on a large-scale research, public and educational project about Redbad and early medieval Frisia in the coming years.

Under the leadership of the Fries Museum & Keramiekmuseum Princessehof, we are joining forces in the Netherlands with Firda, Mythemakers, Fryske Akademy and the University of Groningen, and in Germany with the Ostfriesisches Landesmuseum in Emden, Ostfriesische Landschaft, and the Niedersächsisches Institut für historische Küstenforschung to make this history accessible.

The project includes not only an exhibition (2026 in Leeuwarden, 2027 in Emden), but also a scientific publication, a book for the general public, an educational programme for primary, secondary and vocational education and a historical role-playing game!

Learning Hub Friesland will coordinate the Educational Programme work package. And we are looking for YOU!

📢 Are you affiliated with a Dutch school (primary, secondary, vocational) and would you like to join in the development of the educational programme and/or our exchanges with northern German schools? Get in touch!

🔹 Project REDBAD is being carried out within the framework of the Interreg VI programme Deutschland-Nederland and is co-financed by the European Union, the Niedersächsische Ministerium für Bundes- und Europaangelegenheiten und Regionale Entwicklung, the Province of Fryslân and the Province of Groningen.
